Though Microsoft Word is a very robust and time and tested software application, there are occasions when it will stop responding and may even crash. All one needs to do is repair the application using the various available techniques. There are various problems that may occur while using Microsoft Word and there are various techniques that can be used to repair or correct them. The various problems that could affect MS Word may include crashing, freezing, plug-in errors, document errors or various other smaller errors. Though the universal solution to correct any problems with MS Word is to reinstall the entire application but in general cases it is quite improbable to reinstall it all over gain. In such cases one could go in for other simpler options and try to repair Microsoft word by oneself.
The first step to repairing MS Word is to understand the intricacies of the application. Basically, MS word being such a professionally made application, everything is easily stored and shelved in the computer in select locations. MS Word stores all its user settings and global macros in the global template of the user. The add-ins and startup macros are stores in a Startup folder made by MS Word itself. Toolbars and other macro settings are stored in registry keys. Other spell checking, dictionary and grammar tools along with profiling tools are stored in registry keys also. Let's look at some of the common problems and their solutions a little more elaborately.
The most basic problem is of MS Word freezing or not launching at all. This may occur due to some corrupted template which is stopping the application from running. As mentioned above, global templates are stored in a file called normal.dot which MS Word checks and loads every time Word is launched. This file, if corrupted, stops Word from running properly. To check and confirm this case all one needs to do is to open the Run prompt and type winword.exe/a. If it works properly, then all one needs to do is to search the computer for the normal .dot file and delete it. The next time Word will start, the normal.dot file will be recreated.
If Word still doesn't work, then the error is due to missing or corrupt Registry keys. For correcting this problem, we need to open the folder termed C:\Windows\ Application data\ Microsoft\ Word\ Startup and look for files causing the problem. Also one has to look for a folder called DATA in the following locationHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\ Word (where x denotes your version) and delete the DATA folder. For spell checker or grammar checker error, one has to look for a folder at the same location called Profiling Tools and delete that. Alternatively, for smaller errors, one could use the inbuilt error checker and fixer provided by Word. First, click on the Help menu and then select Detect and Repair. From then on, one just needs to follow the instructions and Word will correct all minor problems by reloading the previously working settings. If nothing works, one could always report the problem to www.microsoft.com and they will certainly get back with the solution to the problem.
